Nick grew up in Grantham, Lincolnshire where he initially started playing music on flute at age 7, followed by bass guitar at 12. His interest in the bass became more serious when he switched to double bass having been inspired by the records of Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman.
Having decided to pursue music as a career Nick went on to study at Birmingham Conservatoire, where he learnt from such musicians as Dave Holland, John Taylor, Tony Levin, Arnie Somogyi, Mark Hodgson and Hans Koller.
As part of Greyish Quartet Nick’s musical flexibility opens up numerous creative opportunities with regard to developing the band’s original music. In addition he consistenly brings a strong rhythmic and harmonic tenacity to live performances.
Nick is currently working regularly in Birmingham in a number of projects as a sideman and leads his own quartet featuring Sam Wooster (tr), Rachael Cohen (as), and Jim Bashford (dr).
